The Boyfriend

By a Pioneer in Urban America

Aïcha ran around the apartment like an excited high-school girl.

“Are you going to a party today?” I asked, trying to figure out what was going on.

“No,” she replied. “Mahmadou is coming today!” He is her new boyfriend.

For the past few months, she and I have been reading and discussing the Bible together. During one of our times together she explained that according to the Muslim tradition she is expected to marry again, because she is a widow. And lately, when she tells me about Mahmadou, I am concerned whether their relationship will affect her interest in Jesus and the Bible.

But that day, when Mahmadou arrived at the apartment, he pulled out Aïcha’s French Bible from a pile on her kitchen table and asked which version it was.

“I am studying the Bible every week and comparing it to the Quran with a man in in the city,” he explained. His statement flabbergasted me.

I can count on one hand all of the men I know from their West African people group who are studying the Bible. God, in His sovereignty, happened to pick a potential husband for Aïcha who is interested in the Bible!

Please pray for Mahmadou. He does not yet see Jesus as the Son of God. He is convinced that Jesus was only a messenger. But, Aïcha explained to him that through reading the Bible for the past few months she has come to see that Jesus is the Son of God. Please pray for Aïcha to stand firm in her belief and for God to change Mahmadou’s heart!

I praise God for the incredible work that He’s doing in Aïcha’s life! Will you pray with me for Aïcha and Mahmadou? This Pioneer and her team work as church planters with the immigrants and international students in their city, an urban center here in the US.
